2026 syllabus - Brass and Woodwind
- Classes are open to amateur competitors.
- Classical classes must choose selections from the current Royal Conservatory of Music Syllabus.
- Popular classes must choose selections, at proper grade level, which adhere to the specific class genres.
- Participants entering grade/level classes must not have completed a conservatory exam at that grade level at any time prior to the start of the current festival.
- Selections may be used in one class only.
- Pieces with piano accompaniment must be accompanied by a live pianist. Participants are responsible for arranging their accompanist.
- Memorization is encouraged, but not required.
- Original copies of musical scores must be given to the adjudicator. If not playing from memory, the competitor(s) must also have original copies. The use of photocopies will result in adjudication only.
- Competitors must enter at least two (2) classes to qualify for awards.
- All levels are eligible for Provincial nomination.
- Brass and Woodwind adjudicator will make the final decisions with regard to awards and Provincial recommendations.
BW01 Brantford School of Instrumental Music Trophy
To be eligible for the Brantford School of Instrumental Music Trophy, senior students must perform in a minimum of three (3) classes. Two of the three classes MUST be classical classes, and one may be a senior level popular or Canadian composer class.
Performers must play classical classes at their current level of study. Participants entering grade/level classes must not have completed a conservatory exam at that grade level at any time prior to the start of the current festival.
Performers must have at least one adjudicated mark over 85 to be invited to compete in the festival's Trophy Night competition. To participate in the Trophy Night competition, competitors must have performed in two or more classes at the previous year's festival. To be invited to Trophy Night this year, a performer must have participated in Brant Music Festival 2025.

BW02 Classical - Own Choice
One selection. No pop music. Repertoire need not be out of the RCM syllabus. Flute, clarinet, recorder, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, or orchestral percussion.
BW03 Classical - List A
One selection from the current RCM syllabus, List A. Flute, clarinet, recorder, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, or orchestral percussion.
BW04 Classical - List B
One selection from the current RCM syllabus, List B. Flute, clarinet, recorder, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, or orchestral percussion.
BW05 Classical - List C
One selection from the current RCM syllabus, List C. Flute, clarinet, recorder, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, or orchestral percussion.
BW06 Classical - Studies/Etudes
One selection from the current RCM syllabus. Flute, clarinet, recorder, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, or orchestral percussion.
BW07 Classical - Concert Class
Two classical works of equal difficulty, showing stylistic balance. No popular music. Flute, clarinet, recorder, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, or orchestral percussion. Maximum time 25 minutes. No minimum time.
BW08 Classical - Chamber Ensembles
Any combination of woodwind and/or brass instruments, 4 to 8 players. Own Choice, No popular music.
Competitors must perform two (2) contrasting selections.
The maximum performance time is 20 minutes. There is no minimum time limit.
Only one ensemble member must register and submit the class fee.
Please register with a group name.
Accurate performance times must be included on the entry form. Do not guess timing.

NOTE: Only one selection may have a brief solo, or solo ensemble passage, which may not exceed twenty percent (20%) of the total length of the selection.
